  • On your Mac download and install the Microsoft Remote Desktop client for Macs using the following URL: https://apps.apple.com/app/microsoft-remote-desktop/id1295203466?mt=12?mt=12
  • Click Get button to download the app.
  • In the Connection Center, click + and then click Desktop to create a new remote connection.
  • Next, enter the PC Name. This will be your office computer’s name followed by the port number :513
    (i.e., eso111-pcXXX.ad.bu.edu:513). How to Find your PC’s Name.
  • Under User Account leave at default setting “Ask Me Every Time“.
  • Optional – For Friendly Name enter what you want to call the connection. (i.e. BU Office Computer).
  • Once done click the Add button to create new connection.
  • To start a remote session double-click your PC name or Friendly name tile in Desktops.
  • Click Show Certificate.
  • Click Always Trust to prevent seeing this warning again for the PC specified.
  • Click Continue.
  • Enter your BU login name (ADxxxxxxxxxx) and your Kerberos password to access your office Windows computer.
  • Log off or Disconnect from the office computer to terminate your Remote Desktop connection.
  • When finished, disconnect from the active VPN session.

It is highly recommended that, once you have your PC’s name, you test the process by connecting to it remotely from a colleague’s work desktop. Note that you will NOT need to use the VPN when testing in this manner.

I'm trying to connect to a Windows computer on over a VPN connection using Remote Desktop connection. I opened Network on mac and created a new connection. I filled the inputs for server address, account name, password and applied. I connect the VPN and it connects. On your off-campus/home Mac, open the Microsoft Remote Desktop app. If this is the first time you are running it, you'll be prompted to allow microphone and camera access. Once, logged in you will see a window displayed with icons for a number of applications. Click on the icon titled “Remote Desktop” You will see an additional popup to allow you to access Remote Desktop using the Microsoft RDP client for MAC Chrome Users Click on “Open Microsoft Remote Desktop”. If you create a virtual private network, you won’t have to expose the Remote Desktop server directly to the Internet. Instead, when you’re away from home, you can connect to the VPN, and your computer will act like it’s part of the same local network as the computer at home, running the Remote Desktop server. Click on the icon titled “Remote Desktop”. You will see an additional popup to allow you to access Remote Desktop using the Microsoft RDP client for MAC. Click on “Open Microsoft Remote Desktop”. Select Always open these types of links in.

Logging into VPN

Windows
  1. Open a web browser and navigate to the appropriate VPN portal
    • Hospital Employees: https://msvpn.mountsinai.org
    • School Employees: https://msvpn.mssm.edu
    • Vendors: https://msvpn-vendor.mountsinai.org
  2. Login using the Following:
    1. Enter your AD username
    2. Enter your Password
    3. Click on “Continue”
    4. Enter the VIP Security Code (the Code changes every 30 seconds)
    5. Click “Login”
  3. Once, logged in you will see a window displayed with icons for a number of applications. Click on the icon titled “Remote Desktop”
  4. You will see an additional popup to allow you to access Remote Desktop using the Microsoft RDP client for MAC
    • Chrome Users
      1. Click on “Open Microsoft Remote Desktop”
      2. Select Always open these types of links in the associate app
    • Safari Users
      1. Click on “Allow”
  5. An Additional Prompt will come up asking you to put in your password, Enter your AD Password and click on Continue
    • Note: a userid starting with f5, will be put in the username field. You do not need to put your userid as this is passthrough from the f5 client.
  6. You are will be logged into your assigned Window Desktop

Know Issues and Troubleshooting:

Q: I login to the Mount Sinai VPN on a Windows PC but I do not see the RDP icon
A: Your workstation was not added to your AD account. Please contact the Helpdesk to have your workstation’s Fully Qualified Domain Name added to your AD account for RDP access.

Q: The RDP icon appears, but when I click on “Connect” I get the error message “The connection was denied because the user account is not authorized for remote login”
A: Your AD network account was not added to the AD group to allow Remote Desktop Connection. Please contact the helpdesk to have them add your account to the RDP Group for Remote Desktop Connection.
